Most of us spend a considerable amount of time in our work space but few actually take out time to decorate and personalise it the way they would with their home. It only makes sense to make our work space enjoyable and bring more positive energy into our lives. There are many ways to accomplish this and it’s important to incorporate your own style and taste but here’s a list of my favourite ways to make your cubical suck less.
Add Some Greenery
Adding some real (or fake) flowers or plants is a great way to bring in some fresh colour to your works space. If you’re using real flowers, not only do they purify the dusty office air and improve your health, but they also serve as a reminder that the outdoors still actually exist on those long work days. Here are some ideas:
Put Up Some Artwork
Having art pieces around you actually subconsciously improves your energy, mood and creativity. A number of studies suggest that colours can have a huge impact on the quality of your life. Nancy J. Stone, PhD, a professor of psychology at Creighton University says that specific colours have different effects on your mood such as making you happier, calmer, or inspired, depending on what colours you choose. Check out how each colour can affect your mood here . Use pieces that inspire you and speak to you. Using the mixed wall art positioning appears to be popular right now. I’m using these Moustache Stationery art pieces as I enjoy more modern/chic stuff.
Upgrade Your Desk Accessories
Most people that I know tend to use the boring, generic (usually the cheapest) office accessories that their work place provides. But spending a little extra and investing in items that you regularly use can make your space more enjoyable. We spend tons of money and time decorating our homes and making them comfort nests, so why not do it with your desk? Adding some items that are classic, elegant, and modern like this stapler and tape dispenser is a sure shot way to enjoy where you work. I also recently picked up some cheap wire pencil and folder holders from the dollar store and spray painted them metallic gold. Worked like a charm!
Make Your Desktop Background A Work Of Art
Adding a nice desktop back that keeps you motivated is a great way to spruce up your work space. It is also a good reminder to keep your desktop organised and clean so you can enjoy the art without folders and files everywhere.
This is something so simple you can do and really don’t cost much. Many people use the boring, usually low quality mouse pad that is provided by the employer. Try to customise and personalise your desk by getting a nice mouse pad that better suits your style.
If you’re a regular coffee or tea drinker, the experience can be much more enjoyable if you are using your favourite mug. Or if you’re anything like me and are all about being fancy, you’ll keep a delicate, hand painted china teacup on your desk. Home sense also has some fabulous mugs or if you’re in a creative mood, you can style your own using this Sharpie technique.
Make Your Chair More Comfortable with A Cool Pillow
It’s always nice to have a little extra comfort at your desk. You can pick these fluffy chair throws from Ikea at a pretty good price, or you can totally personalise it and take your space to the next level by creating your own pillow cover using these Sharpie techniques.
Splurging on a new notebook with some premium paper can help you enjoy the writing process and be more productive. There are so many great brands with lovely paper that makes any pen write like butter (Clairefontaine, Rhodia, Tomoe River). This Moustache Stationery notebook is made with Mohawk branded paper, which is one of the most premium in the market. It’s so irresistibly smooth and soft and is one of the most popular Moustache Stationery products.
Put some unique items on display or keep your desk items organised with a cute desk tray that excites you. I personally have a bring pink one that I love which pairs perfectly with the Kate Spade inspired stapler and tape dispenser that I use.
Add an Interesting Piece That Excites You
Having one or two decorative items on your desk doesn’t hurt. Be sure not to use anything too big that may make your desk look over crowded but something like this copper candle holder or tiny cute deer are so perfect and adorable!
The most important thing to remember when sprucing up your work space is to use items that will make you feel good everyday. Bring in colours that brighten your mood and energise you. Make your space comfortable. I’d love to hear about what you’re doing in your office and how you’ve personalised your space. Leave a comment and let me know!
Until next time! xo
